Late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will become just one of 32 Americans to lay in state or honor in the Capitol Rotunda since it was established in 1824, according to Politico.

"The nation mourns the loss of a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wrote in the statement posted on Twitter. "The Senate is keeping Cindy [McCain], the McCain family, all John's friends and staff, and the people of Arizona in our prayers at this tremendously difficult time.

"I appreciate my colleagues, and the entire Senate and House family's assistance with this honor."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had also announced Saturday via Twitter he would introduce a resolution to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in McCain's memory.

Politico reported only 31 Americans – not including unknown soldiers of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Wars – have lain in state at the Capitol Rotunda since the structure was completed in 1824.

Evangelist Billy Graham was the most recent Feb. 28-March 1.

"Sen. John McCain will lie in state in the Rotunda of the US Capitol," House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., tweeted Sunday. "It's hard to imagine a person more worthy of the honor, and I'm pleased that Americans will have the opportunity to pay their respects to this hero and statesman."
