Pollster Zogby: GOP in Good Shape, but Elections Will Be Close

The races in several of the hotly contested states in the midterm elections are looking good for Republicans, but the elections will be very close, says pollster John Zogby.

"As we survey the key battleground states, Republicans are somewhat in the driver's seat in most of those, but these are very, very close elections," Zogby told J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"It all really is going to depend on election-day turnout," he explained. "What that means is ensuring that each party gets out its own base."

"A key element of the Republican base in some states is as much as half the vote that Republicans will receive will be by self-described born-agains, or evangelical voters," he said.

According to Zogby, one of the motivating factors for "Christian conservative voters is fear — fear that the world as we know it is being lost or that things are heading in the wrong direction, and so it's not surprising to me that this one segment would be targeted the way that it is."

The pollster says his polling matches up to Karl Rove's prediction that Republicans will win Senate seats in Montana, South Dakota, and West Virginia.

"At this point in time, you have Republicans retaking a very tiny lead over [Sen.] Mark Udall, [Rep. Cory] Gardner over Udall in Colorado," he explained. "Gardner, the Republican, leads by a point or two."

"Over in Iowa, Joni Ernst, who's become kind of the darling of conservatives, has been behind all summer," he said. "A very recent poll by the Des Moines Register had her six points ahead, and the overall average having her lead by two."

"That's the first time since she won her primary that she's been leading," he added. "And even with money being spent to really delegitimize Joni Ernst as a candidate."

However, Zogby predicts that North Carolina, Louisiana and Colorado will all stay Democrat, and Democrats may gain a seat in Georgia.

"While Mary Landrieu in Louisiana is on the ropes, she's been on the ropes every single time that she's run, this is her third time, and she may pull that out," he explained.

"It's going to be a struggle, but the Republicans are in the ascendency at the moment to get those six seats," he added.
