A former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff isn't sure retired Army Gen. Michael Flynn, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for national security advisor, has the right temperament to serve in such a high-profile White House role.
According to the Financial Times, retired Navy Adm. Michael Mullen said Flynn has changed since he served in the military.
"I think based on the rhetoric, certainly the question is a valid question," Mullen said when asked whether Flynn has the proper temperament to be national security advisor.
"When I knew him, he clearly had the temperament. If it is the 'lock her up' temperament, that is not who I would want to advise me from a national security perspective."
Mullen did, however, praise the retired general who appeared on the campaign trail several times with Trump, which included giving a speech at the Republican National Convention.
"Mike Flynn is both an out-of-the-box and an in-the-box thinker," said Mullen, who called Flynn a "very creative guy."
Flynn is one of five appointments Trump has made, which includes one cabinet position (Sen. Jeff Sessions as attorney general), the CIA director job (Rep. Mike Pompeo), and three senior advisory roles.
