One of the leaders of the Senate Republican conference admitted she believes President Donald Trump's tweets against four minority Democrats were racist.
Senate Republican Conference Vice Chairwoman Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, was asked about the controversy that is renewing Democrats' calls for impeaching Trump.
"Yeah, I do," Ernst said Monday when asked if Trump's inflammatory tweets were racist.
"Uh, yeah. They're American citizens."
The Hill reported on Ernst's comments.
Trump has come under intense fire from Democrats and even members of his own party for telling four House members — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.; Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.; Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.; and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. — to go back to the countries of their heritage.
"Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how ... it is done," he wrote on Sunday.
Of the four freshman congresswomen, only Omar was born outside the United States (Somalia). Ocasio-Cortez is a Puerto Rican born in New York City, Pressley is an African-American born in Chicago, and Tlaib is a Palestinian-American born in Detroit.
