White House Chief of Staff John Kelly will remain in the capital to work on immigration negotiations while President Donald Trump travels to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum.
"Chief Kelly stayed in Washington, D.C., to work on immigration reform, while remaining in close contact with the president, US delegation and staff in Davos," White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said in a statement Thursday, CNN reports.
Immigration became a central issue leading up to the recent government shutdown, specifically over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and Trump’s proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., told The Hill on Thursday that Kelly has become "the enforcer" moving Trump away from an agreement that would allow those protected by DACA to stay in the country.
