President Joe Biden is expected to praise Vice President Kamala Harris for her work at the border, according to the Daily Mail. As part of Biden's joint Congressional address, he is also expected to ask Congress to pass his immigration proposal. The proposal, revealed in March, includes an eight-year pathway to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants. Some of Biden's immigration proposals have already passed with bipartisan support, including the Dreamers bill, which passed the House with nine Republicans behind it. The Farmworkers bill passed with 30 Republicans supporting it.

According to The Washington Post, a bipartisan group of 14 senators is meeting, five Republicans and nine Democrats, in the hopes of coming together on a border policy.

According to the White House, Harris met with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei after Biden had tasked her with finding the "root causes" of the migration of illegals to the border.

"And as we have discussed, these are the acute factors that, in many ways, are causing people to leave their homes despite the fact that they would probably prefer to stay," Harris said to Giammattei, "there are also longstanding issues that are often called the 'root causes' of immigration. We are looking at the issue of poverty and the lack, therefore, of economic opportunities; the issue of extreme weather conditions and the lack of climate adaptation; as well as corruption and the lack of good governance; and violence against women, Indigenous people, LGBTQ people, and Afro-descendants."

The Daily Mail reports that data from Customs and Border Patrol show that the numbers of immigrants apprehended at the border jumped from 96,974 in Feb. to 168,195 in March. The latter number is the highest its been since March of 2001.

"What we really need is for [Biden] to admit that his policies and rhetoric caused the crisis. The results of this crisis are as predictable as they are disastrous — for both migrants and American citizens," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said on the House floor last week.

Other Republicans have come out to criticize Biden for his halting of building the border wall. "Not securing the border. Not a better plan for these children. Just 'woke' proofreading. This is not going to get the job done," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
