Kathy Griffin — the comic who sparked a furor when she posed holding a bloody Donald Trump mask — returned to caustic form on Monday, tweeting a photo of herself with the publicist who set up a meeting between the president's oldest son and a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin.
Along with the photo, showing a beaming Griffin with her arm over the shoulder of Rob Goldstone at an unidentified event, she suggests she's waiting to be grilled by Robert Mueller.
Mueller is the ex-FBI chief who is special counsel in charge of the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race and whether the Trump campaign was involved.
It's the first time Griffin has alluded to Trump publicly since her teary apology for last month's posting of a gruesome photo in which she stands grim-faced, holding what looks like the president's severed head.
The stunt was roundly condemned and Griffin was hit with death threats, axed from her co-hosting job with CNN's New Year's Eve coverage and had five comedy shows canceled. She also was quizzed by Secret Service agents about the photo.
Trump "broke me," she said during a news conference afterwards.
On Monday, The New York Times reported Donald Trump Jr. was told by email that a meeting arranged by Goldstone to discuss potentially damaging information about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was part of Russia's effort to aid his father's campaign for the White House.
Trump Jr. has now hired New York criminal defense attorney Alan Futerfas to represent him.
Futerfas dismissed the Times report — which Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" could be "a potential form of collusion" — as "much ado about nothing."
In a statement obtained by Politico, the lawyer said "Robert Goldstone contacted Don Jr. in an email and suggested that people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Clinton in her dealings with Russia.
"Don Jr.'s takeaway from this communication was that someone had information potentially helpful to the campaign and it was coming from someone he knew. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed."
The president's son also invited his brother-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to attend the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower.
