Republican Sen. John Kennedy said he has "full confidence" in White House chief of staff John Kelly despite the bad decision he made allowing an adviser to stay on despite spousal abuse allegations.
Kennedy saved his harsher comments for Rob Porter during a CNN interview Thursday.
Porter resigned from his position of staff secretary Wednesday after his two ex-wives accused him publicly of spousal abuse, a charge that Kelly and the White House reportedly knew about for months.
"I think General Kelly has done an extraordinary job as chief of staff for President Trump. I think he's a good man. And sometimes good people make bad decisions," Kennedy told CNN. "Doesn't mean they're bad people, just means they're human. I've got full confidence in General Kelly."
Kennedy then turned his remarks toward Porter.
"If you want to serve the public, particularly as a member of a president's staff, I don't care who you are, even if you're a Rhodes Scholar, you can't beat the hell out of your spouse. It's wrong," Kennedy told CNN.
