Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said he is supporting House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., to be the next House speaker.
Brady, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, made his remarks during an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt on Friday.
Asked by Hewitt if he was supporting McCarthy for the post being vacated by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Brady replied: "You know, I am. I think Kevin has, McCarthy, has done a terrific job throughout this country and throughout our caucus, and he deserves a chance to move into that position.
"And what I appreciate among our leadership right now is no one is distracted by this potential speaker's race in November. We're all focused on delivering for the American people. That's the right thing to do."
He noted Ryan and McCarthy have different styles, but said the "agenda that they are working toward today is identical."
Ryan announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election in November.
"I will be retiring in January, leaving this majority in good hands with what I believe is a very bright future," he said.
