House Republicans' chief tax writer Rep. Kevin Brady on Wednesday said an intraparty "solution" to protect GOP lawmakers from tax-strapped blue states is close to being announced, the Washington Examiner reported.
Republican lawmakers from New York, New Jersey and California have been pushing back on a provision to eliminate state tax deductions as an offset for tax cuts, citing extreme blowback from constituents who would be unhappy over losing an important deduction from their federal taxes.
Those fears are about to be put to rest, with the House and Ways Committee chairman saying at a Wednesday breakfast that "a solution will be announced" before the legislation gets released next week, the Examiner reported.
"I do expect to reach an agreement with our high-tax lawmakers, because I think it's vitally important we help Americans keep more of what they earn, regardless of where they live," the Examiner quoted Brady.
Brady said the solution would come from adjustments to the bill, some combination of property tax breaks, child tax credit, and/or tweaking income levels on the new tax brackets, the Examiner reported.
