California is breaking the law with its sanctuary laws that protect illegal immigrants, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday, but he's sure the Trump administration will win its lawsuit against the state.
"Californians believe in the Constitution," the California Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
"That's what so outrageous here. We are a rule-of-law country."
However, the Supreme Court has held up decisions in similar cases, said McCarthy, and he believes that will happen again.
McCarthy also discussed President Donald Trump's call for strong tariffs on steel and aluminum and told the program that the measure is nothing new for the president.
"He has talked about this for some time," said McCarthy. "What he is saying here is 'I'm concerned about China.'"
China produces "59 percent of all the steel 53 percent of the aluminum and they are subsidizing it," said McCarthy.
Trump did give exemptions for Mexico and Canada, McCarthy pointed out.
"I'm one who believes in free trade, but fair trade," he said. "I think there is a way we can have both in this situation to really send a message to China."
McCarthy on Monday also discussed Pennsylvania's special election to replace Sen Tim Murphy, expressing belief that Rick Saccone, the Republican candidate, is "the guy," as he is both an expert on North Korea and a veteran.
He said he also has faith that Republicans will keep their majority in the House following this year's midterm elections.
"History is not on our side," he said. " In history you usually lose 29 seats. I will tell you it's much different this time. When you look at what has happened with the tax cuts. . . and Nancy Pelosi sitting out there saying these are crumbs? I think we are going to keep the House in strong measure."
