History is against Republicans with the upcoming midterm elections, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy acknowledged Monday, but he pointed out that the current economic growth may make matters different this time around.
"The party that gets the White House normally loses seats by 30 in the off year," the California Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."
"But the last party in power that had a GDP of over 4 percent, they actually gained."
That, he said, will be what the November elections will be about: a matter of results versus resistance.
"Think of this," he said. "In the last 49 years in America, unemployment has only been below 4 percent for eight months. Eight months in 49 years. Three of those eight months was this year. Not one Democrat voted for that tax bill, so all this economic growth, they don't get any credit for it."
President Donald Trump has come under fire after the court proceedings against two of his key associates, former campaign manager Paul Manafort and lawyer Michael Cohen, but the matters do not involve anything during his presidency, said McCarthy.
"Look at what he has accomplished so far," he added. "I have been to 24 states just in this month alone campaigning for people, what I'm hearing out there is a whole different story. They can attack him all they want, but this president has proven results."
