House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reportedly will support Chair of the House GOP Conference Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., in retaining her leadership post despite calls for her removal, according to CNN.
Cheney angered more than half of the GOP caucus when she joined nine other House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump on Jan.13. Critics wanted her removed from being the No 3 Republican in the House.
PunchBowl News reported Wednesday that McCarthy would back Cheney to remain in leadership, per Breitbart.
House Republicans were meeting Wednesday to discuss Cheney's future as Chair of the House GOP Conference.
A senior House Republican told Breitbart many GOP lawmakers believed Cheney should step aside voluntarily. Reps. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y. and Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., had been mentioned as possible replacements.
Cheney had vowed to remain in her position despite opposition from her GOP colleagues.
"I'm not going anywhere," she told Politico last month. "This is a vote of conscience. It's one where there are different views in our conference."
It was reported Republican parties in 10 Wyoming counties had censured Cheney for her impeachment vote.
Cheney and nine other Republican House members voted in favor of impeaching Trump for inciting of an insurrection of the Capitol on Jan. 6.
The Sweetwater County Republican Party said the lawmaker had "betrayed the trust and failed to honor the will of the very large majority of motivated Wyoming voters who elected her."
The Wyoming Republican Party's state central committee was expected to entertain a censure motion of its own at an upcoming meeting Saturday.
