House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) pledged the GOP-controlled Oversight Committee would investigate President-elect Donald Trump if it ever found just cause, The Hill reports.
"The Oversight Committee is supposed to be oversight no matter who is in" the White House, said McCarthy, who supported Trump.
"Oversight is oversight. And I want Oversight to hold me accountable, too," he added. "It's not based upon [whether it's] Donald; it's based upon what is the role of your jobs, carry out your jobs and put blinders on."
The Hill notes McCarthy's comments following Democratic calls for Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) to look into Trump's possible conflicts of interest with his personal business dealings in foreign countries.
And Democrats are also calling for Chaffetz to push for Trump to release his tax returns.
But, according to The Hill, McCarthy expressed confidence Trump's pick of Don McGann as White House counsel will help the incoming president deal with any possible business conflicts.
Politico reports that Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings from Maryland has already asked for the Oversight Committee to review Trump's "financial arrangements" for any potential conflicts before being sworn in as president.
