North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is committed to resolving the feud between his county and the United States, President Donald Trump said hours after meeting with the reclusive leader this week.
Trump spoke with Fox News anchor Bret Baier aboard Air Force One during the trip back to the U.S. from Singapore, where Trump and Kim held an historic summit to discuss North Korea's nuclear disarmament.
"It should have never been allowed to get to this point," Trump said in the interview which aired Wednesday evening. "With that being said, Chairman Kim wants to resolve the problem because he knew that we weren't playing around, I wasn't playing around. He's not playing around. I think we have a very good relationship. We understand each other."
The two leaders and their top aides met for several hours in Singapore. They signed a document afterward that outlined their goals — one of which being North Korea abandoning its nuclear weapons program.
When Baier pointed out that Kim's regime has brutally murdered people, including members of Kim's own family, and has committed other human rights violations, Trump said it is time to start from scratch.
"I could go through a lot of nations where a lot of bad things were done," Trump said. "With all of that being said, the answer is yes, I'm going from today. I'm going from maybe 90 days ago. . . . We got a call that [Kim] was [sending North Korean athletes] to the Olympics . . . that was sort of the beginning of what we have right now. We are very far down the line."
As part of the agreement struck between Trump and Kim, the U.S. will start recovering the remains of U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War to give them a proper burial back home.
"He agreed to it immediately," Trump said. "It was pretty great."
