Krauthammer Slams Budget Compromise - 'Total Loss' for Trump, GOP

By    |   Tuesday, 02 May 2017 11:58 AM EDT

Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer harshly criticized President Donald Trump and the Republican Party for coming away with a "total loss" in the budget compromise hammered out this week to avoid a government shutdown.

Speaking on Fox News' Special Report, Krauthammer said, "Trump got rolled. The Republicans got rolled. They ended up with nothing, really. It's sort of embarrassing."

He also dismissed the supposed strategic thinking behind the decision that "we're halfway through the year, only a few months left, this has all been negotiated in the past. You save your fire for September when you do [the budget for] next year," insisting that is "what they say every time, that they save their fire, and they don't use it the next time."

Krauthammer said he supports some of the ideas that Trump has proposed recently - like the gas tax - but this wasn't one of them.

"There's no denying the fact that this [budget compromise] was not a win. He was not the winner he said he was, or negotiator. This is a total loss."

The budget compromise has also been severely criticized by conservatives, mainly because it did not include money for a border wall or a deportation force, and it fails to cut funding to sanctuary cities if they do not obey immigration enforcement. Further, the budget compromise does not include reduced funding for Planned Parenthood.
