The pledge that no one would lose his or her existing health insurance as a result of the Affordable Care Act needs to be honored, Sen. Mary Landrieu insists.
The three-term Louisianan Democrat said Wednesday that she would introduce or co-sponsor legislation to guarantee that Americans could keep their existing insurance,
Politico reported.
"The promise was made and it should be kept. And it was our understanding when we voted for that bill that people, when they have insurance, could keep what they had," said Landrieu,
who is facing a tough re-election battle next year. "So I'm going to be working on that fix."
Despite explicit promises, beginning with President Barack Obama, millions of policy holders in the individual marketplace have been notified by insurers that they will have to switch from existing plans to ostensibly better coverage.
Landrieu's bill would allow them to retain their soon-to-be-cancelled plans even if better policies are available through the exchanges.
Landrieu said she didn't think Obama had purposefully misled the American people.
"I didn't think it was intentional," she said according to Politico. It would have been preferable had Republicans tried to make the law better rather than over and over again trying to repeal it, she added.
The most recent poll, conducted by liberal-leaning
Public Policy Polling, shows Landrieu with 48 percent support to 41 percent for likely Republican opponent Rep. Bill Cassidy.
Landrieu has raised considerably more campaign money than Cassidy.
