Luther Strange is doubling down on President Donald Trump in his bid to remain in the Senate, telling an Alabama audience last week that Trump is "the greatest thing that's happened to this country," AL.com reported.
Strange, appointed by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions when he became attorney general, faces a special primary in August against nine other Republicans.
Strange thinks Trump is the ticket.
"President Trump is the greatest thing that's happened to this country," Strange said at the candidate forum in Montgomery over the weekend, AL.com reported. "I consider it a Biblical miracle that he's there."
GOP Congressman Mo Brooks, also running for the seat, won a straw poll taken at the forum, AL.com reported.
However, suspended Judge Roy Moore, not at the forum, leads the field, according to the state's internal polling. In that survey, Strange is running second and Brooks third.
The general election will be held in December.
