A newly formed MAGA Patriot Party intends to target Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump, The Epoch Times reports.
The party’s founder Jim Davis told the outlet that the group has two strategies in mind. “Number one, that’s to try to primary certain Republicans out of office, if we can win a primary against them. And if not, to split the vote and put one of our party candidates against them,” he said.
Their effort to take out an incumbent could be successful if a primary run fails and a candidate opts to run in the general election as a third-party candidate. The scenario could result in a Democrat taking the win over the incumbent Republican.
Davis said it would “rid the Republican Party” of the so-called Republican in name only, or RINO, in office.
There were 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. The MAGA Patriot Party is targeting Rep. Liz Cheney, who is already facing a challenger in the 2022 primary. The group is also after Florida Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, and the five senators who agreed holding an impeachment trial was constitutional even though Trump is no longer the president.
“Those are on the chopping block for us to try to either primary, or if we have to — to me it’s a last resort — is to split the vote and try to win the seat back in the following election,” Davis told The Epoch Times.
The MAGA Patriot Party was formed as a political action committee last month. According to Davis, their goal is to fix the GOP as some members feel the current Republican officeholders aren’t representing their constituents.
Davis said the group was not given a warm reception from the Trump team. Still, he said the MAGA Patriot Party is working with people in a handful of states including Nebraska, Texas, and Colorado to find candidates to run and support.
Davis said the ideal candidate is a moderate Republican who backed Trump’s conservative policies and nominations, even if they didn’t latch onto his polarizing personality.
“They still would support Trump because they know they didn’t get the policies they want” before he took office, he told the outlet.
He said the group will not “go away until they feel satisfied that the Republican Party is unified and it’s a party of the people and that the elections are going to be free and fair.”
