Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the political arm of the gun control advocacy group, backed Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in her 2014 election.
The group announced Tuesday, it is supporting one of her Democrat challengers, HuffPost reports.
The action fund of the group has endorsed Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon. She is one of at lease three Democrats in the primary race. Challengers include Maine gubernatorial candidate Betsy Sweet and attorney Bre Kidman.
In a statement, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund wrote that Gideon is a strong supporter of universal background checks and red flag legislation.
“A vote for Sara Gideon is a vote against Mitch McConnell, who has made the Senate the place where desperately needed gun safety bills go to die,” John Feinblatt, the president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said in a statement.
He lauded Gideon for having “walked the walk” on tightening Maine’s gun laws while serving in the legislature.
The group also announced endorsements for about a dozen other candidates.
Gideon already has received several endorsements including Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America and EMILY’s List, a political action committee that backs female Democrat candidates who support abortion rights.
Collins is a four-term senator facing one of her toughest reelections yet. In addition to losing support from the gun advocacy group, she is facing heat over several recent votes including her confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in 2018 and acquitting President Donald Trump during his impeachment trial, HuffPost reports.
The Maine primary will take place on July 14. It was rescheduled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
