Rep. Mark Green Announces Retirement After Mayorkas Impeachment

By    |   Wednesday, 14 February 2024 08:46 PM EST

A day after being a key figure in the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., announced his retirement saying he will not run for reelection.

"Today, with the House having passed HR 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home," he wrote in a statement.

Green oversaw the monthslong investigation into Mayorkas and Mayorkas' policies that have allowed over 6 million illegal border crossings since Biden took office in 2021. Green and his panel concluded that Mayorkas had engaged in "high crimes and misdemeanors, specifically his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the laws of the United States, and his breach of the public trust," according to a statement from Homeland Security.

"Our country — and our Congress — is broken beyond most means of repair. I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington. As I have done my entire life, I will continue serving this country — but in a new capacity," Green's statement continued.

In an interview with Newsmax in January, Green called the Senate bill provision to permit 5,000 illegal entries a day "absurd," telling "Rob Schmitt Tonight "I'm the chair of the Homeland Security in the House. It's dead on arrival."

Green entered Congress in 2018 from the 7th Congressional District of Tennessee, which represents a large portion of Nashville.
