Bill O'Reilly to Newsmax TV: 'No Surprise' Trump Wants New Mueller Oversight in Whitaker

(Newsmax TV's "The Wayne Allyn Root Show")

President Donald Trump's appointment of Matt Whitaker as acting attorney general means he was looking for someone he can better trust to oversee the Russia investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, Bill O'Reilly told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "The Wayne Allyn Root Show" on Wednesday, O'Reilly reacted to the news of Jeff Sessions' firing as the nation's top law enforcement official.

"Not surprised, [I] predicted it on Monday, nobody knew the day," O'Reilly said.

"It's no surprise that Mr. Trump wants somebody to oversee the Mueller investigation. Sessions had recused himself, so now the acting attorney general is Matthew Whitaker. He's Sessions' chief of staff, but he can oversee Mueller and he can report directly to President Trump."

To this point in the Russia investigation, which began in May 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has been supervising Mueller's probe. Reports Wednesday night suggested Whitaker has taken on that role.

"I think the president's comfort zone is higher with Mr. Whitaker," O'Reilly said.

O'Reilly also discussed Tuesday's midterm elections results, which saw Republicans pad their majority in the Senate but lose their grip on the House.

"I think President Trump has to recognize that the reason Republicans lost the House was because of his personality," O'Reilly said. "It was about women, American women not really liking the president's style and being goaded into supporting the Democrats based on style, not substance, in my opinion."
