The fire chief of an upstate New York town was demoted after he used a racial slur on Facebook to describe Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
Jim Brewster will remain a firefighter in the village of East Syracuse, but was removed from the top job by the village board, CNY Central reported.
Mayor Robert Tackman told the outlet Brewster has been suspended without pay during an investigation into the June post.
A screen capture of the comment — that was later deleted — shows the comment was about Waters.
"Maxine gives the word (expletive) a bad name," it read. The expletive was the n-word.
"He has expressed remorse for posting that, and he has said he's sorry to me," Tackman told the news outlet.
Brewster went through a Civil Service hearing before the decision by the board to demote him; meetings have been set to name a permanent chief and assistant chiefs, Tackman told the news outlet.
Waters, one of a few House Democrats to openly call for President Donald Trump's impeachment, became a target for threats and verbal attacks after she called for protesters to publicly confront Trump administration officials earlier this year.
