President Joe Biden may be promising to unify the nation but that can't happen when he's making a "liberal Democrat agenda" the priority through his slew of executive orders, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Thursday.
"What unity is there in closing the pipeline?" the California Republican said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "You lose more jobs, energy cost goes up. What unity is there on the first day of joining the Paris accord and the World Health Organization? China becomes stronger, gets an advantage over us economically, and the World Health Organization is the one who lied to us about COVID. Why would we reward that on the very first day of coming back?"
What Americans want, he added, is to get back to work, send their children back to school, and get the coronavirus vaccine distributed.
"That is the unity agenda," said McCarthy. "That's the agenda that Republicans are working towards and would work with Joe Biden on."
Instead, Biden should "sit down with both sides," as he's starting with a different beginning than former President Donald Trump had, said McCarthy.
Biden knows the executive orders he is signing are partisan and if that's the start, "what more is there to come?" said McCarthy. "You won't be able to unite this nation and everybody believes the division needs to be united to make America stronger."
It's "totally wrong" for Democrats to push for Trump's impeachment trial, as the matter was "purely politically driven," he added.
"President Trump is a private citizen," said McCarthy. "Why would you spend your time on this ... the best chance he would have right now is to say let's not do impeachment and dismiss this. Let's unite this nation."
Meanwhile, McCarthy said Republicans were close to winning the House majority this year and he believes the party will win it back in two years.
"We can have differences of opinion," said McCarthy. "I believe we'll have a conference next week to air the differences, unite individuals, and move forward to work for all Americans. That's the best approach that we can take."
McCarthy also said he believes Trump remains the current leader of the Republican Party and has the ability to keep leading it.
