House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney has "a lot of questions" she must answer after she voted to impeach former President Donald Trump, according to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
“Look, I support her, but I also have concerns," the California Republican tells Greta Van Susteren in an interview airing Sunday, reports The Hill. "She took a position as a No. 3 member in conference."
McCarthy also said the Wyoming Republican, the third-highest ranking party member in the House, "never told me ahead of time" that she was going to vote for Trump's impeachment.
"One thing about leadership, if we're going to work together, we should understand," he said. "We know that this is going to become a difficulty."
McCarthy said he supports keeping Cheney in her leadership role, but called for her to work with him and other party leaders, even if she does have a difference of opinion with them.
"If we're going to lead within the conference, we should work together on that as a whole conference because we're representative of that conference," said McCarthy. "So I support her, but I do think she has a lot of questions she has to answer to the conference.”
Conservatives have called on Cheney to step down from her chairmanship with House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., and freshman Rep. Matt Rosendale, R-Mont., circulating a petition in an attempt to force a conference meeting, so that lawmakers can vote on a resolution for her to step down.
The Wyoming lawmaker is also facing at least one primary challenge, but several Republicans are still supporting her.
"I think we need to keep our eye on the ball," Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill, told reporters this past Tuesday. "If we continue to give the American people a vision of Republican internal fratricide, that doesn't do us any favors in convincing them that we're better off to lead the House of Representatives come midterm presidency of Joe Biden."
