The Republican Party has “changed for the better” under President Donald Trump, House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy said Sunday, defending the GOP from critics within the party.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the California Republican refuted remarks by former House Speaker John Boehner that the party was “taking a nap somewhere” since Trump took office.
"I would think we've changed for the better,” McCarthy declared, adding:
“I'm proud of this Republican Party. I'm proud of what we have been able to achieve — 2 million more jobs in America. Yes, we are working hard, exactly what we said we would do. That is a proud Republican Party. That is a party that stands on principles and part of what we ran on and part of what we said we would do and we are accomplishing it."
He also praised the cooperation from the Trump White House with the Russia investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.
"The president said let's get to the bottom of this,” McCarthy said. “We have spent millions of dollars and investigated it in the House. We have investigated it in the Senate. We are looking for is there any collusion — and there has been no collusion. The legal teams can argue about what they can and cannot do.
“One thing I found is that the White House has been cooperating."
