The United States must focus on the weaknesses that have allowed the Chinese Communist Party to take advantage of it, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday while commenting on a new report from the House China Task Force that offers a blueprint for action from Congress and the Trump administration.
“We were woken up to the real challenge after COVID in the supply chain and looking at every department in government, there’s a lot of weaknesses there that China has taken advantage of us of," the California Republican told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo. "We really have to open up our eyes and do something much different and that’s what this report really shows the rest of the country.
McCarthy appeared on the program with Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who chairs the China Task Force.
The report made 83 key findings and 430 policy recommendations, and McCarthy on Wednesday highlighted three major items.
“We need to change our supply chain, not just for medical but every other element that we deal with within China,” he said. Innovations are also needed when it comes to the Department of Defense, especially with artificial intelligence.
The United States must also refocus with its Treasury Department, said McCarthy.
“They have a team there for Iran and for North Korea, but they have no team in there, especially when it comes to sanctions when it comes to China,” McCarthy said. “You know how much they’ve been stealing from us.”
The task force consists of 15 Republican members. Democrats were invited to be on it but refused, and McCaul said he thinks that was a "big mistake."
“They just want to focus on the president," he said. "They don’t want to focus on where the virus came from, that’s China ... the virus was made in China, but we want manufacturing and jobs made in the United States of America.”
