Senate Conservatives Fund Pushes McConnell Primary Challenge

The Senate Conservatives Fund is asking its members whether should endorse Matt Bevin, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's 2014 primary opponent.

The questions on the organization's website, however, reflect an anti-McConnell bias.

For example, one asks whether respondents "approve of Mitch McConnell's record of cutting deals with President Obama to increase the debt limit, raise taxes, and fund Obamacare."

The organization has gone after McConnell for months, putting out ads demanding his support for GOP efforts to defund Obamacare even if it causes a government shutdown, The Hill reports.

"There's no question that if Kentucky Republicans nominated Matt Bevin it would be a huge victory for the state and for the entire country," the fund's Executive Director Matt Hoskins said in a statement, according to The Hill.

"Mitch McConnell has a liberal record, he's unwilling to stand up to President Obama, and he's so unpopular that he could cost Republicans the seat."

The Senate Conservatives Fund believes Bevin can beat McConnell in the primary, Hoskins said. "But he won't win unless the grassroots rise up. That's why we're seeking input from our members in Kentucky and across the country to see if the support is there to win this race."
