White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany Thursday denied that President Donald Trump suggested to North Carolina voters that they cast their ballots twice, insisting that he was telling them to make sure their votes have been tabulated.
"The president is not suggesting anyone do anything unlawful," she told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "He wants verification. The Democrats want the mail-in voting. Democrats are saying, 'Trust us, but don't verify.' The president is saying verify your vote."
Trump came under fire Wednesday after he told North Carolinians to attempt to vote twice — by mail and in person — to test the security of the mail-in voting process and ensure their votes are counted.
McEnany said Thursday that when you get an absentee ballot and send it in, it records that you have voted, and if you turn up at a polling site, that vote will show as having been counted.
"He said send it in early," said McEnany. "Go and see if it has been tabulated and if it hasn't, then vote. The Democrats say we want a system full of fraud and no verification that you voted."
McEnany also addressed comments made by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who said that the president would need "an army" to be able to walk around New York City.
"It's not often you hear a governor nakedly talk about losing control of his state," she said. "You can't come to New York without an army, I guess that's the case when you have more than 1,000 shootings before Labor Day and a 277% increase in shootings in a one-month period over the year prior. It is rare you hear a Democrat governor admit to failure. That's what Gov. Cuomo has just done for us."
