National security adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster opposes President Donald Trump on every foreign policy position, The Daily Caller reports.
The website reported it talked to two former National Security Council officials, one of whom said, "Everything the president wants to do, McMaster opposes."
"Trump wants to get us out of Afghanistan — McMaster wants to go in. Trump wants to get us out of Syria — McMaster wants to go in. Trump wants to deal with the China issue — McMaster doesn't.
"Trump wants to deal with the Islam issue — McMaster doesn't. You know, across the board, we want to get rid of the Iran deal — McMaster doesn't," the former NSC official told The Daily Caller.
McMaster has been at the center of several reports recently detailing his problems of getting along with Trump, butting heads with White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon over Afghanistan, and possibly being replaced as NSA by current CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
McMaster "wants to send more troops to Afghanistan, so we're going to send him," Bannon-backers told Axios.
McMaster also has been purging allies of Bannon and former national security adviser Michael Flynn off the NSC.
The latest to go was Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the 31-year-old senior director who was thought to be untouchable.
Others fired by McMaster since he took over as NSA:
- Rich Higgins.
- Derek Harvey.
- Tera Dahl.
- Adam Lovinger.
- K.T. McFarland.
And one NSC official told The Daily Caller to expect more in the next few weeks.
"I just fear there is a real creeping of status quo thinking that is taking over the place," the official told the Caller.
