Donald Trump's former campaign adviser Michael Caputo said the president's critical tweets about FBI officials are an "insurance policy" against political bias in their investigations.
His comments came on Tuesday during an interview on CNN's "New Day."
"The president's tweets are an insurance policy for the American people to make sure that its leading law enforcement organization remains unbiased," Caputo told the program.
"I don't think he's going after them personally. He's going after them professionally. He's not talking about what they're doing at home. He's talking about what they're doing at work."
The Hill noted Trump has been particularly critical of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and has questioned whether the investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the presidential campaign has been tainted by political bias.
He has claimed McCabe's wife took thousands of dollars in campaign funding from a political action committee led by Democrats with ties to Hillary Clinton during a race for a Virginia State Senate.
"I know that's disappointing for some people, but the president is highlighting this bias to the American people for good reason," Caputo said. "If there's going to be an investigation it must be unbiased."
