Michael Caputo, a former adviser to President Donald Trump, said that special counsel Robert Mueller's team was "manufacturing" crimes in the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"Even though it doesn't seem so far that they've got direct evidence of Russian collusion, they're still managing to manufacture crimes," Caputo said on CNN's "New Day," Thursday, The Daily Caller reported.

"They're finding people, then they're trying to find crimes. They're not seeing crimes, then trying to find the people," Caputo told CNN.

"I wouldn't say that across the board," Caputo responded when asked by anchor Chris Cuomo if he believed that some of those who are indicted are not guilty.

However, some of the people who are being investigated in the probe will be exonerated, said Caputo.

"I believe, for example, that Paul Manafort has a really good shot at defeating these charges," Caputo said, referring to Manafort, a former Trump campaign manager.

Caputo said that he believed the Mueller team would find nothing on Roger Stone, a Republican operative who is being scrutinized for connections to Russia and WikiLeaks.

"I believe they won't find anything, and when they don't, I believe the Mueller team will go after him for jaywalking."
