Michael Flynn, who was then serving as national security adviser, met with FBI investigators exactly a year ago about his communications with Russia's ambassador, but concealed the interview from President Donald Trump and top White House officials, NBC News is reporting.

The private meeting with investigators took place on Jan. 24, 2017 in Flynn's West Wing office and without a lawyer present, according to the network news.

The FBI had contacted Flynn's office earlier on Jan. 24 to set up the meeting for later that day, but did not indicate what agents wanted to discuss with Flynn.

The sources told the network news two FBI agents arrived at the White House and met with Flynn.

Flynn pleaded guilty in December to lying to the FBI during the interview. He is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

NBC News noted investigators have interviewed Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who played a key role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey, along with numerous members of Trump's campaign and White House inner circle.

Flynn's time as national security adviser and his ouster by Trump are issues Mueller's investigators have been asking witnesses about, the network news reported.

The Washington Post reported Mueller is seeking to question Trump about his decisions to oust Flynn and Comey.

Sally Yates, who was then acting attorney general, informed the White House about the meeting with Flynn two days later, NBC News said. Yates has reportedly cooperated with Mueller's investigation.

Two unidentified people familiar with the matter told NBC News that Trump was not aware Flynn had talked to investigators until two days after the meeting took place.

Yates informed White House counsel Don McGahn that Flynn had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his conversation with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
