Former presidential adviser David Gergen said Thursday "the clouds are darkening over the White House" in the wake of a report Gen. Michael Flynn has offered to be interviewed on possible Trump campaign ties to Russia in exchange for immunity.
In comments on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront," the cable network's senior political analyst, and onetime adviser to four presidents, called the report from The Wall Street Journal on Flynn "a big story."
"The clouds are darkening over the White House tonight," Gergen said. "I think the only reasonable – the most reasonable interpretation of that statement is that he wants immunity in exchange for – for talking openly . . . and telling his story. "
"People don't generally ask for immunity unless they're worried what they say will make them vulnerable to prosecution," he added. "This could wind up being a question of executive privilege, of who has it and who doesn't, and keep him from testifying just as they tried to keep Sally Yates, according to various news reports . . ."
"It looks more and more suspicious, like there's more fire there," he said. "Why would the national security adviser even be talking about immunity? . . . What's the underlying story there? That's all along been the really critical issue."
