President Barack Obama is "rewriting the Constitution" for his own political agenda, including in the case of his signature healthcare law, Rep. Michele Bachmann charged Tuesday.
"He has rewritten the Constitution for himself as a part of his effort to fundamentally transform the United States of America," the Minnesota Republican told
Fox News.
She lobbed the accusation prior to a House Judiciary Committee hearing on the president's use of executive power,
Politico reported.
Bachmann pointed to the administration's use of regulatory authority in the implementation of Obamacare, suggesting the president is abusing his power to prevent political fallout.
"What are these delays about, what do they have in common?" she asked. "They all put off the very negative effects of Obamacare until the next election. That's what this is all about. This is all political management. But we believe the Constitution has to be respected."
When Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum noted Obama himself once was a constitutional law professor, and wondered what his legal reasoning on the use of executive authority might be, Bachmann tersely replied:
"He doesn't want to be bound by any law, and that's the rub."
"The Constitution says no man is above the law, including the president of the United States," Bachmann said. "I think the president would be very sorely unimpressed with what he hears today."
Bachmann has considered taking
action against Obamacare before, saying in November she and several of her GOP colleagues in the House were considering suing Obama for allowing plans canceled under the Affordable Care Act to be extended through 2014.
