As Democratic presidential candidates targeted Mike Bloomberg with attacks on his self-funded campaign and past comments against women and on race, former Vice President Joe Biden took a practical tact.
"In terms of who can beat Donald Trump, NBC did a poll [Tuesday]: It says Joe Biden is best equipped to beat Donald Trump," Biden said in his opening statement at Wednesday's Democratic presidential primary debate in Las Vegas. "That's what your poll said."
Biden was forceful, pointing to NBC News moderators.
"It said that I can beat him in those tossup states too, the states we have to win," Biden continued with a wry smile. "I'm ahead by 8 points across the board.
"So, in terms of being able to beat Donald Trump, I'm better positioned to beat him, according to your poll, than anybody else to beat Donald Trump."
Biden added a challenge of Bloomberg's record as the former mayor of New York City.
"The mayor makes an interesting point: The mayor says that he has a great record; that's he's done wonderful things," Biden continued. "Well, the fact of the matter is he has not managed his city very, very well when he was there. He didn't get a whole lot done. He has stop and frisk, throwing close to 5 million young black men up against a wall."
