Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is funding a $15 million advertising campaign for Joe Biden in Ohio and Texas.
Bloomberg, a billionaire, will use his super PAC, Independence USA, for the ad blitz in all television markets in both states, The New York Times reported. The newspaper attributed the information to one of Bloomberg's political advisers.
A New York Times/Siena College poll released Oct. 7 showed Biden and President Donald Trump virtually tied on Ohio with the former vice president leading 45% to 44%.
And a CBS News poll released late last month showed Trump holding a slim advantage over Biden, 48% to 46%, in Texas.
Both Texas and Ohio had been considered red states.
Bloomberg’s general election activities had centered on Florida, where he has vowed to spend $100 million on behalf of Biden.
But Howard Wolfson, an aide to Bloomberg, said recent private polls conducted by the former mayor’s team were convincing enough to spend money in Ohio and Texas.
“We believe that Florida will go down to the wire, and we were looking for additional opportunities to expand the map,” Wolfson said. “Texas and Ohio present the best opportunities to do that, in our view.”
The two states have 56 Electoral College votes between them. The Times noted Trump’s campaign is counting on carrying both states.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg is planning to increase television ads in Florida, according to Wolfson.
