Mike Huckabee, one of Donald Trump's most vocal supporters, appears to be somewhat wary of the president-elect's pick to run the Veteran's Administration.
"Many of us had hoped he would appoint an outsider who would do a thorough house-cleaning. But after interviewing over 100 possibilities, he's chosen the current VA undersecretary of health, David Shulkin," the former Arkansas governor wrote Thursday on his Facebook page.
"The announcement was received with some skepticism, since Shulkin is an Obama appointee and not a veteran himself, and he's already part of a bureaucracy that's under well-deserved fire for its failure to provide quality, timely services to America's veterans."
Huckabee, who ran for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination before dropping out and joining the Trump campaign, noted Shulkin does have some good points.
"[He has] a strong hospital background, and he's been leading the internal VA initiative to improve access to medical care for vets. Maybe he just needed the backing of a chief executive who makes health care for veterans a top priority and will help clear away any obstacles blocking it," Huckabee said.
But he suggests that the jury is still out on Shulkin.
"I hope Shulkin can turn around the VA, and I wouldn't second-guess Donald Trump's proven ability at picking the right person for the job," Huckabee said.
"I just trust that if Shulkin doesn't measure up and make medical care great for veterans as fast as possible that Trump will exercise his other proven ability, for saying, 'You're fired.'"
