Russian President Vladimir Putin should work with President Donald Trump to end the Russia-Ukraine war, Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., told Newsmax Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Trump posted on Truth Social: "I'm not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people ... If we don't make a 'deal,' and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries. Let's get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way - and the easy way is always better. It's time to 'MAKE A DEAL.' NO MORE LIVES SHOULD BE LOST!!!"
Trump is "absolutely correct," Lawler told "Rob Schmitt Tonight."
"This conflict needs to come to an end. The Biden administration allowed this war to flourish over almost three years," he said.
"And obviously, there's been a lot of death and destruction and a lot of American tax dollars spent. I have been a strong supporter of Ukraine, in part because of the consequences that would result for other former Soviet satellite states in Europe.
"But the reality here is this: Vladimir Putin needs to work with President Trump to bring this war to an end," Lawler said.
Trump has been very clear from the beginning about his expectations for Ukraine to be free of Russian aggression, he said.
"And ultimately, I believe that we need to make sure as part of that negotiation: that we protect Ukraine's sovereignty and reaffirm that we will not tolerate Russian aggression in the region or around the globe."
