Republican strategist Mike Murphy said he has been told that as many as 30 Republican senators would vote to remove President Donald Trump from office if their ballots were secret.
Murphy, a former senior adviser for the presidential campaigns of Mitt Romney and the late John McCain, made his remarks Wednesday in an interview on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports."
"One Republican senator told me if it was a secret vote, 30 Republican senators would vote to impeach Trump," he said.
Murphy maintained Trump's alleged misconduct was "much clearer" in the rough transcript of the president's call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky than other information detailed in the report by special counsel Robert Mueller.
"These Senate Republicans, should the Democrats vote impeachment, which is far more likely than not, are going to be pinned down to a yes/no answer," he said. "If they provide cover for Donald Trump on this, a clear violation of his role as president, we're going to lose Colorado with Cory Gardner. We're going to lose Maine with Susan Collins. We're going to lose Arizona with [Martha] McSally, and the Democrats will put the Senate very much in play."
