The Heritage Foundation is hosting an event for its top donors at the Washington, D.C. hotel owned by incoming president Donald Trump, and Trump's Vice President-elect, Mike Pence, is giving the keynote speech.
Politico reported that the hotel, a few blocks from the White House, points to possible financial conflicts of interest for Trump, as the Azerbaijani embassy and the country of Bahrain have both booked events at the hotel.
Heritage Foundation spokeswoman Sarah Mills said that it booked the hotel due to spacing issues.
"The Heritage donor conference is being held across the street at the Ronald Reagan Center. We had such a big response to the Pence speech, confirmed less than two weeks ago, that the only space close by that would meet our space needs and new security requirements without negatively impacting the conference schedule was the adjacent Trump hotel."
Trump had said he would deal with his business conflicts by setting up a "blind trust" and having his children run his business empire. Critics said that would not meet requirements.
The real-estate mogul said, in a series of tweets on Nov. 30 that as president, he would leave his business "in total."
Trump personally profiting from foreign countries could be seen as a violation of the "Emoluments Clause" of the Constitution, according to Salon.
The Heritage Foundation is a think tank whose mission is "to formulate and promote conservative public policies," according to its website.
