House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached a "new low" when she ripped up her copy of President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, Vice President Mike Pence, who sat next to Pelosi, said Wednesday.
"I did not see her do it," Pence told Fox News' "Fox and Friends," noting that she was also talking throughout the address. "I found out a few moments later and I think it was a new low. I was not sure she was ripping up the speech or the Constitution."
Pelosi's action made clear the contrast between herself and Trump, who had spent 90 minutes speaking about America, said Pence.
"In the final moments she tried to make it about her and I think the American people see through it and see through the pettiness and politics," he commented. "I think what they got last night was a speech that lifted up the country that celebrated the incredible progress that we've made in our economy, rebuilding our military and strengthening our course."
But for Pelosi to rip up the speech was "beneath the dignity of a joint session of Congress, and I think it will be remembered," Pence said, adding that he met Trump's guests, and does not understand what she meant when she called the speech being full of lies.
He noted that he watched Trump build the speech, including everything about the economy, the military, taking out ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and more, and he expects that when the dust settles, Trump's speech "will be one of the best State of the Union addresses in history."
Pence also noted that back the 1990s, he was in the radio business when Rush Limbaugh was coming up, and he said that when Trump awarded him the Medal of Freedom, it was deserved.
"I know for a fact he did not expect the medal last night," said Pence. "I reached him shortly after he and Catherine left the capital and he was very moved and he told me he was going to spend the rest of his life trying to earn it and I said, 'Rush you have already earned it.'"
Meanwhile, Pence said the White House is expecting a bipartisan vote on impeachment later Wednesday, and he is looking forward to what will be done in the upcoming months, including on infrastructure, drug prices, and more.
