Breaking:
Vice President Mike Pence has tested negative for the coronavirus, his press secretary said. Second Lady Karen Pence also tested negative.
"Pleased to report that the COVID-19 test results came back negative for both Vice President @Mike_Pence and Second Lady @KarenPence," Katie Miller tweeted.
Earlier Saturday, Pence said he would be tested for the coronavirus after a member of his office tested positive. The staff member’s positive diagnosis was announced Friday.
“Neither President Trump nor Vice President Pence had close contact with the individual,” Miller, the vice president’s press secretary, said in a statement Friday. “Further contact tracing is being conducted in accordance with CDC guidelines.”
Earlier story:
Vice President Mike Pence will be tested for the coronavirus Saturday, despite experiencing no symptoms.
"The White House doctor has indicated he has no reason to believe that I was exposed and no need to be tested," Pence told the daily task force briefing at the White House.
"Given the unique position I have as vice president and as the leader of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, both I and my wife will be tested for the coronavirus later this afternoon."
Pence is the designated head of the task force.
His announcement comes after news one of Pence's staffers has tested positive for the coronavirus this week. Pence noted the staffer has not been in direct contact with him nor President Donald Trump and has not been at the White House since Monday.
The staffer is self-quarantined and had manageable cold-like symptoms for a period of about 36 hours, according to Pence.
Pence also announced more than 195,000 coronavirus tests have been administered in the U.S. thus far.
