CIA Director Mike Pompeo is facing a key vote on Monday by members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in his bid to become secretary of state.
The Wall Street Journal said the panel is poised to vote against him.
According to the newspaper, all of the Democrats on the committee have said they will oppose his nomination.
They are joined by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in their opposition to Pompeo. If they carry through with their votes, it would give Pompeo's opponents a majority on the panel since it is divided between 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats, the Journal noted.
But even if the committee does vote against Pompeo, his nomination can still be brought to the full Senate for a vote, where it is expected to have an easier time clearing. If that does happen, Pompeo would be the only secretary of state in modern times to win confirmation by the State without getting a committee endorsement, the newspaper said.
And The Hill reported there is still doubt on how certain Democrats will vote. It noted some moderate Democrats, who are facing tough re-election campaigns are worried about being labeled obstructionists.
But other Democrats are clearly pushing hard in their opposition to Pompeo.
"It's one of the more important things on progressives' minds right now," said Neil Sroka, communications director of Democracy for America, a liberal advocacy group. "There's a broad sense that this is a nomination fight that Democrats need to stand up and be clear in their opposition to."
Meanwhile, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., chairman of the committee, told CNN that in normal times, he would be approved by the panel "overwhelmingly."
