Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday that he shared the "disappointment" of President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan that the American Health Care Act was pulled from a floor vote because of a lack of votes in the Republican-led chamber.

"Obamacare is failing the American people," the Kentucky Republican said, "and I deeply appreciate the efforts of the speaker and the president to keep our promise to repeal and replace it.

"I share their disappointment that this effort came up short."

Trump told Ryan to scrap the vote on the AHCA after realizing that the proposal to repeal and replace Obamacare would not pass the House.

The plan was vehemently opposed by the conservative House Freedom Caucus, as well by moderate Republicans — who feared that the fallout would affect their chances in the midterm elections next year.

President Trump said "we were very close" regarding the vote and blamed Democrats for not supporting the measure, which had been pulled from the floor twice in as many days.

"We had no Democrat support," he said. "We had no votes from the Democrats."
