Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., saying he's "got to go" an interview with The Hill Wednesday.
"Inside the Republican conference, Mitch McConnell has got to go," he said. "He is the head of the swamp in the U.S. Senate."
Brooks is running to unseat Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., who took Attorney General Jeff Session's spot when he joined President Donald Trump's administration. McConnell has been supporting Strange, instructing the National Republican Senatorial Committee to consider him the incumbent, giving him a distinct advantage. The Senate Leadership Fund has hit Brooks with $2.5 million worth of negative advertising, with up to $10 million allocated for the race.
Earlier this week, Brooks attracted controversy with an ad that used audio from the shooting of Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise.
"This primary, to sum it up succinctly, everybody in this room is familiar with Donald Trump, candidate, pledging that as President Trump he would try to drain the Washington swamp," Brooks told the Hill.
"In this Senate race, the swamp is fighting back, and the swamp's candidate is Luther Strange," he added.
"This is a major battle. If the American people want to continue with the kind of frustration … we've seen over the last six months where the Republicans have the House and Senate and the White House and can't address these major issues, the reason for it is the 60 percent rule in the Senate. That is a major definitional point between my campaign and Luther Strange's," he said.
