Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore suggested on Friday that President Donald Trump was lying about his diagnosis of having contracted the novel coronavirus to gain sympathy ahead of the November election.
Moore, a noted Trump critic and supporter of rival and former Vice President Joe Biden, put forth the theory in a lengthy Facebook post.
"He’s an evil genius and I raise the possibility of him lying about having COVID-19 to prepare us and counteract his game," Moore said. "He knows being sick tends to gain one sympathy. He’s not above weaponizing this."
Moore referenced World War II Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and Spanish dictator Francisco Franco in his diatribe. In addition, he derided former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms.
"I’m certain Mussolini came down with the flu one time," Moore wrote. "Pinochet and Franco would catch a cold every now and then. Margaret Thatcher must have had a migraine or two. None of them suddenly became nice or did good things – or started telling the truth – because they got sick. Jesse Helms with a runny nose was still Jesse Helms."
Moore, known for his liberal documentaries "Roger & Me," "Bowling for Columbine" and "Fahrenheit 9/11," posted on Facebook in August that excitement for Trump was "off the charts."
He correctly predicted in July 2016 that Trump would "likely" beat Hillary Clinton.
