Former presidential political adviser Dick Morris told Newsmax TV on Monday that Democrats are exploiting the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol like the Nazis did with the 1933 Reichstag fire in Berlin, Germany, using it as a pretext to curb civil liberties and consolidate power.
Morris, an adviser to Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, appeared with Tom Fitton, president of the conservative legal group Judicial Watch. He accused the Democrats of cynically having the body of Capitol Police officer Brick Sicknick, who died nearly a month ago from injuries incurred during the breach, lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol a week before the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.
“Obviously Officer Sicknick needs to be honored, and I don’t think it’s inappropriate for him to lie in state at the Capitol, the building he devoted his life to protecting,” Morris said on “Greg Kelly Reports.” “But…one week before the impeachment? There’s an obvious political content to it.
“And let’s look at what (Speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy) Pelosi has done. She’s used this riot as a pretext to put a fence around the Capitol with barbed wire, to propose that no guns be allowed in the Capitol even if members chose to carry them for personal protection, to describe the riot not as a riot, which is what it was, but as an attempted revolution, an attempted coup d’etat, and insurrection that failed. This is all absolutely ridiculous.”
Morris said the rhetoric being used is a prelude to reintroducing the Democrats’ “Domestic Terrorism Act,” which in 2020 had 179 Democratic sponsors and no Republicans and specified white supremacy 33 times and antifa once.
“This is all a windup to try to get that passed,” Morris said. “It defines (domestic terrorism) as white supremacy, right-wing extremists, and neo-nazis. No mention of antifa or al-Qaida or any of that stuff.”
Morris said the Democrats are using the same tactics of the Nazis in pre-war Germany, when a communist was convicted of setting fire to the national parliament and the subsequent decree of Chancellor Adolf Hitler suspended most civil liberties in the country.
“This all a prelude to making speech seditious," Morris said. "You’re going to see people increasingly prosecuted under this domestic insurrection law. It’s much like the Alien and Sedition Acts, that tarred the John Adams administration. They’re using the riot like the Reichstag fire to sanction and approve a massive crackdown on our liberties.”
