Huckabee: Obama Renames Mt. McKinley, Denali, 'What's Next?'

GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is fuming over President Barack Obama changing the name of Alaska's Mt. McKinley to Denali — telling Newsmax TV the nation's tallest mountain shouldn't be named after a GMC truck.

"Where the heck is the Republican Congress that's supposed to be a check and balance? I'd like to see them stand up and tell him he can't do it," Huckabee said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It's amazing to me that the president would rename the nation's tallest mountain after a GMC truck. That's pretty remarkable in it of itself.

"Just kidding, of course, but the outrage is two folds: one that the president thinks he can do whatever he wants even renaming a national landmark. I'm wondering what's next. The renaming of the Washington monument to the Obama monument?"

Denali was the original name bestowed upon the majestic 20,237-foot-high mountain by Alaska's native population.

According to the White House, a prospector renamed the peak Mt. McKinley in honor of the future president in 1896 and "the name stuck."

While Alaska changed the peak's name to Denali in 1975, Washington kept with Mt. McKinley. Denali is a native Koyukon Athabascan word meaning "The Great One" or "The High One,"

"This name change recognizes the sacred status of Denali to many Alaska natives," Interior Sec. Sally Jewell said.

Denali is also the brand name of GMC's top-of-the-line SUVs and pickup trucks.
