Special counsel Robert Mueller is asking the White House to preserve all documents relating to the 2016 meeting Donald Trump Jr. had with a Russian lawyer and others, CNN is reporting.

"As you are aware the special counsel's office is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, including any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of Donald Trump," the news network quoted a letter from Mueller to the White House.

"Information concerning the June 2016 meeting between Donald J. Trump Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya is relevant to the investigation."

The letter asks the White House to save any documents relating to "any subjects discussed in the course of the June 2016 meeting and also "any decisions made regarding the recent disclosures about the June 2016," meeting, according to a CNN source who has seen the letter.

The request for documentation preservation includes text messages, emails, notes voicemails and other communications.

The meeting was set up by an intermediary in emails promising Trump Jr. critical information about Hillary Clinton, The Hill noted.

Those attending the meeting included Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, The Hill said.
